Profile of the Average KAMSC Applicant

Should I apply?

This question is often asked and no one answer is correct. The information items listed below are a composite of the average student who applies to the KAMSC program but are in no way a definite set of qualifiers. These items are given as a means for you to compare student qualifications with those that fit the profile of an average applicant. If you have questions or would like further explanation on any of the below items, feel free to contact us.

Applicants to the KAMSC program have:

  • above a B average in math, science and English classes in 7th and 8th grade
  • scores above the 90th percentile on standardized tests given at the middle schools (Iowa, Stanford, DAT, MAT, etc.)
  • scores higher than 54 out of 72 on the KAMSC entrance exam (offered in January)
  • While these items are consistent with most of the student applicants to KAMSC, there are exceptions. In addition to these items, the KAMSC Applicant Review Panel also considers: student responses to the application questionnaire; teacher recommendations of student performance; and characteristics of success such as self-motivation and responsibility. Entrance exam scores may be offset by extremely high teacher recommendations and/or exceptional student responses.

Please do not treat the items listed above as required standards for acceptance. They are provided for application information purposes only!

NOTE: Students should be enrolled in an Algebra, core plus, or higher level math class during their 8th grade year. If a student is not enrolled in such courses, the student must demonstrate proficiency by obtaining a passing score on a nationally normed standardized algebra test administered by KAMSC.
